2013 Breeders’ Cup Distaff: Contender Resumés

Even though a small field is likely, it will not be easy to win what shapes up to be a very contentious 2013 Breeders' Cup Distaff. In preparation for the Distaff let’s take a look at the racing resumés of the four horses that are most likely to get the job done.
Trainer, Bill Mott has Royal Delta and Close Hatches in the Distaff. Mott has nine career Breeders’ Cup wins and five of them have come in this race. Rider, Mike Smith will be seeking his sixth win in the Distaff aboard Royal Delta.
Todd Pletcher is seeking his eighth win in the Breeders’ Cup with Princess of Sylmar. His only victory in the Distaff was with Ashado in 2004.

Richard Mandella, the trainer of Beholder, won four races on the same Breeders' Cup card in 2003 at Santa Anita: the Juvenile Fillies, the Juvenile, the Turf, and the Classic. In total Mandella has won seven Breeders’ Cup races. This includes Beholder’s win in last year’s Juvenile Fillies. Mandella is seeking his first win in the Distaff.

After reviewing the resumés of these Breeders’ Cup Distaff contenders, who do you think is most qualified to get the job done when the horses go into the gate at 7:35pm ET on November 1st?

Mr.Haskin's was saying that Royal Delta seems to not run her "A" game when she uses lasix. When she runs without, she runs very strong. Any truth to that?
4 of the 5 Distaff winners for Mott lost their final prep race...food for thought.
CH has the best chance to win is a sleeper
Beholder next to Princess. The best two 3 year olds male or female. I wonder if they'll remember each other.
Royal Delta will dominate because when she's on...she's on lol. POS and Beholder could upset though....maybe.
As dominant and talent as the soon to be 3 year old champion POS. I am to big a fan of Close Hatches to bet against her. So Go CH!
Beholder likes the track and the distance just fine. I've been talking her up since the oaks for this race... best of luck
BEHOLDER! Best trainer, this filly is training so great! Her works are just breezes, take a look at the times. She is just coming into her own, altho she has been fantastic before, I think now she has matured & can take out the Big Girls. We'll see...
Race shape favors Sylmar if likes track. Beholder loves track but not sure favored distance, and may be compromised by RD.
fear Royal Delta more than any of these fillies to take down the princess. every time she has lost, she comes back to win ruthlessness
  • ruffianlover · True. But Royal Delta will have to run the race of her life- because the Princess squashed her once and just keeps getting better and better. Will be a great show down for sure. · 1396 days ago
  • Sully · Not quite...RD has lost back-to-back twice in her career. While both times were in conjuction with DWC races ('12 finished 2nd to Awesome Maria in the G3 Sabin prior to her 9th in the DWC & this year finished 2nd in the G2 Fleur De Lis prior to her 10th in the DWC), she has never faced the same horse the caliber of PofS many of us thinks she is back-to-back in her career. It's tough, but I'm pretty much con-RD in the Distaff especially if her odds aren't worth me using her. · 1396 days ago
I just can't get over how much I love Authenticity for the setup here. Authenticity-Princess of Sylmar-Royal Delta-Beholder. Either way, I can very easily see myself going 4 deep in this potential 6 horse field in the horizontals, or I may take a stance and only go 2 deep with Authenticity & PofS (highly unlikely though).
these resumes look sharp! But, i can only hire one? I may change my mind but right now i'm going to go out on a limb and take the SA Girl, Beholder
I'm not going to try to talk people out of going with Royal Delta, because she is a true champion. But do not forget that her competition this year will be far tougher than she has faced in years past. Those 3 year olds are absolutely incredible. RD has only faced one of them so far, and lost.
Very fun format, Matt. I'm gonna have to stick with Ms. Delta on this one. During her last visit to the Great Race Place she lit up the tote board with the fractions she set, and still ran away with it. Its sure going to be one super fun race to watch!
Great format, most intriguing race, greatest concentration of talent...we are in line to see something breathtaking on Nov. 1
Thanks Brian, Bryan, and goblin! The resumes were fun to put together.
I kinda like Royal Delta. She has a couple of stars of the week awards. :) Gotta give y'all a giggle now and then.
Two horse to watch is beholder and close hatches
Joel,in the Beldame.Smith never even tried to get past Roman Invader .Do you honestly think that if Smitty wanted the lead, he would not of had it?
