"Spring" Time at Gulfstream

It’s spring time at Gulfstream Park. Spring Hill Farm time that is. The promising Smart Strike colt is set to return to the starting gate on Saturday after a nine and a half month layoff due to injury. He and main competition Ever So Lucky face an experienced group, but these two highly touted colts are the class of the field.

Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton’s colt broke his maiden at first asking, running away to a 6 ¼ length victory over a field that included eventual Grade 2 winner Quick Wit. In his next start, Spring Hill Farm wired an allowance field going a mile. After two flashy wins in South Florida, it’s no wonder the colt was sent off as the favorite in his stakes debut. Running his record to 3 for 3 was not meant to be, however, as the colt stumbled coming out of the gate in the Tampa Bay Derby and suffered a knee fracture. Despite the injury, Spring Hill Farm was able to run a brave fourth, only 4 ½ lengths behind the winner.

Ever So Lucky also began his career with a bang. He won his debut race by 3 ¼ lengths over eventual Grade 1 winner Golden Ticket. He quickly became graded stakes place, notching a 2nd in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in his second start and a 3rd in the G3 Swale Stakes in his third start. His only other career win, however, was in a one mile allowance race, the distance of Saturday’s race, at Delaware Park.

The Indian Charlie colt will probably be Spring Hill Farm’s main competition, but it is unlikely that Spring Hill Farm will have much trouble dispatching him. Ever So Lucky has been wildly inconsistent during his career while Spring Hill Farm has been the picture of consistency despite an unlucky last start. Additionally, Spring Hill Farm is a perfect 2 for 2 over the Gulfstream track and his recent works indicate he is ready to go. His most recent move was a 5F bullet in 1.00:55 (1/13) on December 23 at Palm Meadows.

Everything looks to be in place for Spring Hill Farm to notch his third career victory and launch a comeback worthy of the promise he showed early in the year. A win or even a good showing in Saturday's race should throw Spring Hill Farm's name into the mix for the Older Male division in 2013.

What the Nation is saying about "Spring" Time at Gulfstream...

Over all I like SHF's pedigree much more than Rightfully So... but he will need to shut me up today after this long layoff!! :) If he stays injury-free, he is one to watch and I will be cheering for him then.

Ever So Lucky is just a tad too slow for this company. I also like Rightfully So here... just hope Romans finally has some good luck at GP... sheesh!!
Rightfully So does look quite good on paper, but I have to stick with my guns here.
After handicapping this one I think I will play Rightfully So, he looks nice on paper, and is bred great. @Brian: I am playing him too!
The gulfstream meet is going to be really good this year!
It's a salty group, but I have faith in SHF's consistency and courage.
I agree this is a very competitive field for a comeback. I hope he can "spring" back into action.
Nice to see him back, but this by no means figures to be an easy spot for him. I like the regally bred ridgling, Rightfully So.

Growing up, I cannot remember a time when I did not love horses. I also loved reading, so it was only a matter of time before my two obsessions combined into one; I have my mom to thank for that one. Knowing how much I loved horses, when she stumbled upon the book Ashleigh’s Diary by Joanna Campbell, she bought it and brought it home to me. After reading the book, I was hooked. Though horse racing was not mentioned in that book, which was a super edition chronicling events that happened before the main character and her family became involved in the sport, it was what the series was all about. Additionally, thanks to the series, I actually wanted to become a jockey.

The Thoroughbred book series kick started what would become a lifelong passion. Unfortunately, Georgia is not exactly big on horse racing, so I have never actually been to a live race. However, I watched every race that was shown on TV; and now, as an adult, I follow the races closer than ever, handicapping, betting on, and blogging about them.

I am in the process of earning my B.A. in History at Macon State College, in Macon, Georgia. Along with reading, I have always loved writing. Once I was done with the bulk of my college career and had the time to write for pleasure, I started my own blog, Wired with Ashley Paige, which you can read here. When I was offered the chance to write for Horse Racing Nation, I jumped at the chance. Though I did not pursue a journalism degree in college, I would love nothing more than to pursue a career in writing, especially if it means I can combine my love of writing with my passion for horse racing.
