What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Absurd. Man O' War is not the best horse of all time, but he is one of the greats. It's not like we're arguing about the Bible, we're just putting a horse in his proper historical perspective. It's not so bad, or sinful, to say he is toward the bottom of the top 10.

I believe maybe union rags would benefit if he ran in a sure win. Not to copy the derbt winner. Only due to him not running in a tongue tie. It would enable his jockey to have more control and possibly get rags more on the bit early and be more forwardly placed coming out of the gate.
  • AmbitiousD · I think Matz tried a tongue tie on Rags for a gallop before the derby. Thinking back, he did not like it and it showed in the quality of his training that day. I agree it would help as you have described, but I dont think the horse really tolerates it well. Can you train the horse into tolerating a TT, or is it a binary yes/no type of thing? · 10 minutes ago ·

I am just a horse racing fan, if I hit a bit is is pure luck. I have a question for true horseman. How do you think Black Gaviar would do in the Breeder's Cup Sprint against the worlds best? Thanks I will hang up and listen.

  • ILuvTurfRacing · I'm gonna reserve my final opinion about Black Caviar until her see her step out of her comfort zone of Australia and face other sprinters abroad. Because basically, to this point in her career, she's beaten a very good sprinter in his own right in Hay List multiple times. But then she continues to beat up on the same ole same inferior horses in Australia. I remember just a few year back how so many people talked about how Overdose was unbeatable because he went unbeaten for so long. But much like Black Caviar in Australia, Overdose ran up his career record by beating up largely inferior horses in Hungary and Germany. Once he came to Great Britain for the Temple Stakes and King's Stand Stakes, he was a soundly beaten 7th at Haydock in the Temple Stakes. Ran a creditable 4th in the King's Stand, but my point being, once he got away from beating the same horses over and over in Hungary, it didn't take long at all for Overdose to get beaten. Hence, my point of waiting to see Black Caviar take on European sprinters at Ascot in the Golden Jubilee before I decide if she's really as good as advertised? Or if she's another Overdose? • ruffed grouse · I am leery of Bodemeister as he is making his 3rd start in 5 weeks and he was a tired horse the last part of the derby. Thoro- Graph has him finishing up the last half in 52 and change. I know he looks good and all that but they can fool you and you realize you made a mistake at about the 1/8th pole. He may be the exception to the rule and if he is he will not look back but I am betting against it. · 4 hours ago ·

Bodmeister will be favourite and the speed. Look for a Preakness record if the track is fast.
Kelso was undoubtedly one of the best. However, an argument can be made for many horses and supported with data, facts, results, etc. So, in my 50 plus years of following the ponies 3 moments flash in my mind when you asked who is the best. One - Secretariat's 31 length victory in the Belmont, Damascus' 10 length victory over Buckpasser and Dr. Fager in the Woodward and Forego's improbable win the the 1976 Marlboro Cup. So thats how I'd rate them. I might juggle the order but those moments would be the top three. I like to hear your special moments that bonded you to a particuliar horse.

  • saratoga john · Having watched the race several times since Derby Day, Guiterrez made two key moves with I'll Have Another. Both occurred at the top of the stretch. One, was at the start, and the other move at the turn for home. The first was getting him out of that 2nd gate to a wide-open space through the stretch so he could relax the horse through the clubhouse turn. The second, was pretty remarkable since this was Guiterrez' first time in a race of this magnitude. It was the key move as they spun off the turn at the 1/4 pole. Drifting out in the middle of the track with Went the Day Well & Dullahan to his outside, the key move was sliding him back inside to make his run at Bodemeister. The closers were still commited the the 7 & 8 paths and stayed out there to launch, but it was too late. Guiterrez was already gone and taking a bead on the game Bodemeister. Bodemeisters' ability to burn those fractions and still be running at the end was quite impressive. That's why I'm taking Bodemeister in the shorter Preakness. · 8 hours ago ·

Meet Ashley Tamulonis

Growing up, I cannot remember a time when I did not love horses. I also loved reading, so it was only a matter of time before my two obsessions combined into one; I have my mom to thank for that one. Knowing how much I loved horses, when she stumbled upon the book Ashleigh’s Diary by Joanna Campbell, she bought it and brought it home to me. After reading the book, I was hooked. Though horse racing was not mentioned in that book, which was a super edition chronicling events that happened before the main character and her family became involved in the sport, it was what the series was all about. Additionally, thanks to the series, I actually wanted to become a jockey.

The Thoroughbred book series kick started what would become a lifelong passion. Unfortunately, Georgia is not exactly big on horse racing, so I have never actually been to a live race. However, I watched every race that was shown on TV; and now, as an adult, I follow the races closer than ever, handicapping, betting on, and blogging about them.

I am in the process of earning my B.A. in History at Macon State College, in Macon, Georgia. Along with reading, I have always loved writing. Once I was done with the bulk of my college career and had the time to write for pleasure, I started my own blog, Wired with Ashley Paige, which you can read here. When I was offered the chance to write for Horse Racing Nation, I jumped at the chance. Though I did not pursue a journalism degree in college, I would love nothing more than to pursue a career in writing, especially if it means I can combine my love of writing with my passion for horse racing.
