My Favorite
2011 Woodward contenders include Mission Impazible, Havre de Grace, Flat Out and Giant Oak
Get ready racing fans because Saratoga is about to blow your socks off! The Juveniles tack center stage in the Spinaway and Hopeful, sprinters get to flaunt their speed in Forego, and then Fillies and Mares get to show off in the Personal Ensign. As if all this wasn’t enough, the afternoon will be topped off with the Woodward, the meet’s final grade on for the Classic division. It will feature some of the roughest, toughest males in the division. However, to add even more drama to the already exciting field, Havre de Grace, one of the leading females, will throw her hat into the ring.

While Tizway, the Whitney winner will not be returning for round two, both Flat Out and Giant Oak, second and third in that race, are still ready to deliver. Flat Out had a lot of questions to answer in the Whitney, and even without a win, he answered them loud and clear. He proved his Suburban win was no fluke and that he was truly an improved horse. Should he show up on Saturday with all cylinders firing, he will not make things easy for his foes.

Giant Oak has seen success this season and tasted grade one glory, but since then he has been plagued by absolutely horrible trips. For some reason this one’s jockey feels that he is the male form of Zenyatta, keeping him way too far back, then taking him unbelievably wide. The grinder cannot give that much ground away and expect to have a hope against his quicker more tactical rivals. With a good trip and pace, this one could see the winners circle again, but that is a big if.

Convocation is a solid horse, always knocking at the door but never getting a win. After running in three straight stakes races, and failing to hit the board in his last his connections dropped him in class for a little booster. The five year old rewarded them with a win, showing them that he may just be ready to deliver his best shot in a grade one.

Ice Box, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, who was laid up for over 10 months returned to the track in late July in an allowance optional claimer. There he finished third to the above mentioned Convocation. He didn’t get the best of trips and most likely needed the race off of such a lengthy lay off. Can he recapture the glory he had in the spring of his sophomore season? It is unlikely, but in year where any race is up for grabs, who knows, he just may surprise us.

With Mission Impazible, you never know what you’re going to get. He is one of those, similar to Giant Oak. There is always an excuse, always something that didn’t go his way and after you finally get tired of giving him second chances, boom! He wins big. I don’t think he will be running that type of race here, but if the son of Unbridled’s Song has anything in his favor it is Todd Pletcher, who is absolutely owning Saratoga.

Last, but certainly not least, is Havre de Grace. Numbers wise, the only horse who stands above her is Flat Out, other than that she completely towers over this field. She should be fit and ready for this race, coming off a stiff race against her nemesis, Blind Luck, in the 10 furlong Delaware Handicap. Normally the foregone breeze and no works over the track would cause me some worry, but the Larry Jones trainee already was acquainted with the track when she ran a close second in the Alabama stakes, last year.

The thoughts here are that the race is between Flat Out and Havre de Grace, with the filly ending up the triumphant one. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that this race will be watched closely to see if the filly can indeed pull the near impossible feat and begin her assault on Horse of the Year.

What the Nation is saying about Woodward Preview...

Well, I don't bet on the horses but do have a list of favorites. I like HDG just because she's the only girl in the race and that's pretty gutsy to run with the boys. Yup...I too remember Rachel's amazing performance in the Woodward and actually her whole career. Did and still do love that lady. Good luck to all the runners!
I will be honest, I did not know Rule was in this race until the entries came out. Now that I know he is one that scares me. He is in good form and when he is in form he can be very very tough to beat. This is one horse that is tough and gritty that you will probably have to roll by on his outside to past, instead of outgutting him.
I'm locking in on Flat Out...Rule would be in my exotics. HDG is a solid horse but not sure against the boys..even though this group is not "world beaters".
Rule, should not be counted out here.
I have Flat Out & Havre de Grace as a boxed exacts in the Woodward
I stand corrected, did not know Rule would be in there and I am glad he is as there should be some pace. I would rather have seen Sidney's Candy, then you would have race. Also didn't know Phil's horse was coming in so the field is larger than I gave credit for.
Tim - believe me i've been all about Stay Thirsty since he broke his maiden, but his credential are just a tad bit weaker than Acclamations, Acclamation with a 10 th and 5th place finish and thirsty with a 12th place and 7th place finish in two races this year. Both would have to win the next prep and a BC race, more of a chance of Thirsty doing that as there will be many pretenders entering their 8 and 9 furlong horses in the 10 furlong Classic, unfortunately Acclamations people are balking at the BC, scared of the Euro's much, I would be two, their 4th or 5th stringer in Cape Blanco is embarrassing all of US turf racing. Therefore he has no legit shot at HOY as he wont even enter the BC. Who are we left with, a horse with 3 losses and a miler in Tizway, he'll be exposed in the JCGC. Mark that down.
I always get a chuckle when the uninformed put both feet in their mouths and hit that comment button. SteveBia, which horse is the Grade 2 winner that is the fav in this year's renewal of the Woodward Stakes. Just wondering. Let me know if you can figure out the riddle. Laz may need to come to your defense. All in all though I believe you've given us all an indication as to your knowledge of the current state of affiars in horse racing that you dont seem to know much about. Thanx for playing the game though.
I would not call it very weak but these are not the best of the bunch. A small field and good post, she has to win this to stay in the running.
Be still my heart, a grade 2 winner is the favorite in this year's Woodward. HDG's HOTY campaign has thus far been pretty sad. She can't win races outside of her comfort zone and even when she runs in a race that her connections have been pointing to as a main summer goal, she loses. If she wins the Woodward then maybe HDG will be back in the discussion for HOTY. I really hope she and Blind Luck meet up again. That satisfying feeling I get when Blind Luck crosses the finish line ahead of HDG is one I'd like to re-live just one more time!
I'm I the only one that think that this year Woodard has a very weak field for HDG? I don't see how this one race with put her in contention for HOY. Right now it is Stay Thirsty, Tizway, Cape Blanco and Acclamation. Unless HDG win the Woodward and the BCC she has zero change of winning HOY.
Dubby what about Stay thirsty . Wins the Dandy/Travers and will be in the JCG and BCC I wouldnt count him out of the mix..
The only horses in the HOY discussion right now are Tizway, Cape Blanco, & Acclamation, HDG is on the outside looking in with a bridge being the Woodward. With a win she probably vaults to the to 1 or 2 spots. On the other hand, we can stop talking about BL, with 3 losses and not much of a summer/fall campaignn, she would need to win the Classic to be in the mix. There is a 0% chance of that happening.
It sure looks like it will be Flat Out chasing home HDG. Can he get to her? I don't think so. A win here, and HDG has a rock solid lock on HOY. She already beat up on Blind Luck earlier in the year, so beating the boys Saturday, and a top notch showing in the BC will wrap it up. If she falters, a win by Tizway or Stay Thirsty in the Jockey Club Gold Cup will give them a major advantage for HOY. Will just need to follow up with a win in the BC, or at least a strong finish.
Let’s see. HDG might assume leadership of the HOY race if she would have won four races in a row starting with a G2 and then consisting of three consecutive G1’s against top competition and at the classic distances of 12F, 10F and 10F again (you can also throw in a 9F effort). It seems to me that HDG will have a lot of catching up to do. Maybe it’s time to give Acclamation some of the credit he deserves.
  • dubby30 · Its hard to give full credit to a horse that is beating up on horses named Falcon Rock, Haimish Hy, Celtic New York, Bourbon Bay and Red Alert Day. At the same time True Grade 1 turf horses were running in true grade 1 races that are known on the national and international scene. At the same time finishing behind Times Gone By and Jeranimo and a few others earlier this year does not a HOY candidate make. But the true marker of a HOY candidate comes when place in against others on a foreign surface, the result for Acclamation, he hit the wire behind another 9 horses at Charlestown, being defeated by Tackleberry, Gone Astray, Inherit the gold, no advantage and rule not the most stellar company to say your horse finished last behind. Well the experimenting with the horse was over and he’s put together an impressive string of races and is on the far outside looking in in that HOY chase, it would have bolstered his claim to have run in the top Grass races in the Nation, the Manhattan, Man O’ War, Sword Dancer or the Arlington Million. The horse that won 2 of those races is far and away a more solid choice for HOY. Cape Blanco that is, his two wins coupled with the embarrassment of finshing not only off the board twice but last in one race doesn’t make him HOY worthy, no matter what he does the rest of the year alas winning the BC Classic. · 266 days ago ·

Going into the Delaware it was a toss up between HDG and B.L/ B.l prevails ok she is ahead now the WOODWARD g1 open company 100 year old race or the ladys secret? Its very easy to see why people would respect HDG assuming she wins it. Acclamation is a candidate as well he is on fire right now. Same for Tizway.
Acclamation is has one grade on in his outside of his division. His connections are not seriously considering the Classic, but more turf races. If turf were America's premeir surface he would hold a distinct lead, but it is not. If he were considering the Goodwood and were to win he would be in the ring, but he is not. HDG is considering the Classic and is looking to build a season that will lead her to HOTY shall she win here.

For ten years my passion for horses has steadily grown. I started out in the hunter/jumper industry and have been showing for nearly eight years now. However, my main focus has become Thoroughbred racing. The first race I ever watched was War Emblem’s Preakness in 2002, and from there I have soaked up any knowledge containing racing that I can find.

I created my own blog Horsin’ Around in August of 2009. As a blogger I became known for my knack of creating heated debates on several subjects and not being shy about sharing my opinion on any matter. I hope you will enjoy reading and debating with me, as much as I enjoy my job as a blogger.
