We're galloping out!! Did you hear??

Hi everyone!  I am writing this out-of-cycle blog to let all of you know about an exciting event that is coming this weekend!

This Saturday (6/25/11) is the Prairie State Festival at Arlington Park!  This annual event showcases the best in Illinois-bred horses in a series of six (yes count ‘em six) $100,000 stakes races.  The races include (and not necessarily in this order):

  • The Lincoln Heritage Handicap – 1 1/16 miles on the turf course for fillies and mares
  • The White Oak Handicap – 6 furlongs on the all-weather track for 3 year old and upwards colts and geldings
  • The Black Tie Affair Handicap – 1 1/16 miles on the turf course for 3 year old and upwards colts and geldings (some real good horses nominated here!!)
  • The Isaac Murphy Handicap – 6 furlongs on the all-weather track for fillies and mares (Lose None and Royal Posh nominated)
  • The Purple Violet Stakes – 1 mile on the all-weather track for 3 year old fillies
  • The Springfield Stakes – 1 mile on the all-weather track for 3 year old colts and geldings

Also inside of the great card expected for the Prairie State Festival is a race dedicated to the Galloping Out Foundation which raises money for the rescue and care of retired thoroughbred race horses.  All purses and commissions for this race will be donated to the foundation by Arlington Park!

Then it gets even better!  (as if that were even possible…)

Following the race card, there is a charity fundraiser for the foundation in the paddock area!  Festivities include a silent auction, an Elvis impersonator (thank you, thank you very much), and a chance to get up close and personal and rub elbows with some of Arlington’s famous trainers and jockeys.  Tickets for this event are only $25 and it does include some munchies and a couple of beverages.  All that for a great cause!

(Hey it's me - the DARK HORSE)

Greetings and welcome to my "dark" blog!  I have been a fan of horse racing since I was about 12 years old.  Growing up in Minnesota, my dad would take me and my brothers to Canterbury Downs and I would practically beg to go every weekend!!  I made my first "big" score there hitting the win, place, and exacta in the same race at age 14 (pulled in $84 with horses named Railroad Red and Racers Dream!).  I also had a poster in my bedroom of Lost Code winning the 1987 St. Paul Derby!

I followed racing all through the remainder of high school and college in Illinois, paying close attention to the likes of Lost Code, Alysheba, Cryptoclearance, Risen Star, Sunday Silence, and Tabasco Cat.  I spent every possible moment at Arlington Park with my dad, taking time to develop computer programs (on Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS) to try to find patterns and handicap races more accurately.  My dad taught me a lot about handicapping races, paying particular attention to class moves!

I'm more of a fan of racing now than ever before, and have made a lot of friends in, and because of, the industry.  For that I am eternally grateful!  Once being deemed the second best racing ambassador in Chicago (hey I've been called worse),
I now reside in the Richmond, Virginia area and will be covering many different aspects of racing - DARK HORSE STYLE!  My goal for this blog is to get people more interested in horse racing while focusing on my home(s) away from home, the race tracks of America! My favorite tracks are Arlington, Colonial, Canterbury, Del Mar, Gulfstream, and Keeneland!

At the end of the day though, I'm just a regular guy who loves horse racing a whole lot.   It is my honor to be a part of the Horse Racing Nation team and I truly hope you enjoy this blog.
