Gio Ponti & Cape Blanco Rematch Highlights Arlington Million XXIX

My Favorite
Cape Blanco (IRE), regular rider Jamie Spencer aboard, outduels defending champion Gio Ponti to win the Man O' War Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York on July 9, 2011
My favorite weekend of the racing season is rapidly approaching!  Here it is: Arlington Million week in all of its glory.  Today I preview the 29th running of the Arlington Million, the premier race that features the top grass runners going 1 ¼ miles on the most excellent turf course in the nation (rail set at “Million” lane 5 of course.)

I’d like to start by focusing in on the new “rivalry” between Cape Blanco and Gio Ponti.  These two horses locked horns in their last meeting: the Man O’War at Belmont Park on July 9th.  Cape Blanco tracked leader Mission Approved and kicked ahead down the stretch to fend off a hard charging Gio Ponti by 2 ¼ lengths.  Gio Ponti had settled back behind the rest of the field and just didn’t have quite enough room to run down the eventual winner.  However, this is not the first time these two turf champions have met!  Gio Ponti had also finished 5th, ¼ length behind 4th place finisher Cape Blanco in the Dubai World Cup back in March.  Now Gio Ponti (below) has his chance for revenge in the Arlington Million on Saturday.  Right off the bat these two horses have been installed as the top two betting choices (9-5 for Cape Blanco and 2-1 for Gio Ponti) and I would expect both of them to remain the top choices at post time.

This isn’t a match race however, as there are other contenders capable of winning this race as well, so let’s take a deeper look!

Let’s not forget that Mission Approved (6-1) also ran in the Man O’War and set the early pace against the two main contenders.  In fact, Mission Approved upset an entire field at 21-1 in the Manhattan Handicap in June at Belmont, part of that field being 3rd place finisher Gio Ponti!  I would expect Mission Approved again to grab the early lead in the Million.  Speed has been holding fairly well this year at the Arlington meet but will it be enough to hold off this world class field?  What amazes me even more about this horse is that he came from (and won) a $40,000 claiming race 5 races back and now is racing in the Million.  Truly remarkable!

Two time Arlington Park winner and local favorite, Tajaaweed (12-1), is coming off an impressive victory in the Grade 3 Arlington Handicap in July.  Top Arlington jockey James Graham retains the mount for the Million for trainer Danny Peitz.  Tajaaweed has a similar running style to that of Gio Ponti as he usually likes to come from behind the pack.  We definitely cannot count out the local runner here.

Worldly traveler Wigmore Hall (8-1) comes back to the USA and Arlington Park for the first time in a year after taking 2nd in last year’s Secretariat Stakes losing to the great turf runner Paddy O’Prado.  If you had a chance to go to Horseplayer Now’s Night School last night, one angle the expert panel mentioned is that horses that are accustomed to traveling overseas tend to acclimate quicker to their surroundings.  If that is any indication you cannot discount Wigmore Hall either.

11-time winner Rahystrada (12-1) is no stranger to Arlington Park either as he not only won last year’s Arlington Handicap, but finished fourth in last year’s Arlington Million.  Also rounding out the field are Zack Hall (10-1), Dean’s Kitten (30-1), Proceed Bee (50-1) with my favorite jockey Chris Emigh aboard, and General Perfect (50-1).

I am very much looking forward to this race!  You can expect Mission Approved to grab an early lead, Cape Blanco to lay just off the pace, and Gio Ponti to close in at the end.  I believe the winner of this race will be either Cape Blanco or Gio Ponti.  Other horses you may want to include in your exotic tickets are Rahystrada, Tajaaweed, and Wigmore Hall.

What are you looking forward to most in the Million?  Who do you think will win?  Who will you have in your exotic tickets?

Tomorrow, I will feature the fillies and mares and preview the Beverly D.

What the Nation is saying about Gio Ponti & Cape Blanco Rematch Highlights Arlington Million XXIX...

I think Gio can do it, I really do. I know he likes Arlington, if only he can get a little pace to run at.
  • ArturoLaguna · Great preview, Brian-makes me nostalgic. Wish I were back at Arlington for the millions. I like Cape Blanco, Gio Ponti, and Wigmore Hall in that order. · 285 days ago ·

Dominguez knows Gio. No excuses.
Gio Ponti is an extemely hard hard ride for any jockey as he has only one run that has to be timed perfectly. Add to that he doesn't always fire when asked but does so at a time of his own choosing.
Let's have firm turf for Gio Ponti to win and Dominguez will have his timing correct under penalty of wrath from all of his fans, and Tajaaweed to place.
Go Gio..Does the old boy have another in him?
Great breakdown of the race. I will be using Gio Ponte, Cape Blanco, Wigmore Hall and Rahystrada in a few exotics. Most will have Gio Ponte and Cape Blanco keyed. If Rahystrada stays around 12-1, I am all over that.
I just sure hope the old veteran, Gio Ponti, will win this one. I have always loved him ever since I saw him race in the Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs way back. I'm definitely looking forward to Arlington Million Day because it's always raced around or on my birthday, which is the 13th :). What a great birthday present :).
Figured you meant it loosely, just putting my two cents in on the topic. Great read by the way!
This is a great pre-view! I can't wait till this Saturday. Rahystrada is a horse that is interesting to me. I've made a lot of money on him over the years..
@orange - I use the term "rivalry" very loosely... that's why I put it in quotes LOL!
I don't think you can call this a rivalry. Both sides need to have a win for it to be one. Cape Blanco is the better horse. Would have been interesting to see the Gio from 2 years ago face him, but the one now can't win

MEET "THE CHICAGO DARK HORSE" - CHRIS SORENSON!

Hi everyone!  I have been a fan of horse racing since I was 12 years old.  Growing up in Minnesota, my dad would take me and my brothers to Canterbury Downs and I would practically BEG to go every weekend!!  I made my first "big" score there hitting the win, place, and exacta in the same race at age 14 (pulled in $84 with horses named Railroad Red and Racers Dream!).  I also had a poster in my bedroom of Lost Code winning the 1987 St. Paul Derby!

I followed racing all through the remainder of high school and college in Illinois, paying close attention to the likes of Lost Code, Alysheba, Cryptoclearance, Risen Star, Sunday Silence, and Tabasco Cat.  I spent every possible moment at Arlington Park with my dad, taking time to develop computer programs (on Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS) to try to find patterns and handicap races more accurately.  My dad taught me a lot about handicapping races, paying particular attention to class moves!

After taking some time off from racing to start a family and finish an MBA, I'm back in full force!  I'm more of a fan of racing now than ever before, and because of the internet I have made a lot of new friends in the industry, for which I am eternally grateful!  I was also recently deemed the second best racing ambassador in Chicago (hey I've been called worse).

My goal for this blog is to get people more interested in horse racing while focusing on my home(s) away from home, the race tracks of Chicago!

At the end of the day though, I'm just a regular guy who loves horse racing a whole lot.   I hope you enjoy this blog.
