Getting Finer With Age: Arlington Million Profile of Rahystrada

We are now less than two weeks away from the 30th Arlington Million! To get all of us ready for the epic race, let’s profile a worthy contender that will likely be joining us on August 18th.

Rahystrada: Rahy – Ministrada by Deputy Minister

This 8 year old gelding has had a very successful career to this point. With over $1.1 million in total earnings he is scheduled to make his third appearance in the Arlington Million in a couple of weeks.

It’s no surprise that this horse has been so successful on the turf, especially if you were to simply look at the pedigree. His father, Rahy, began his career over in Europe where he finished off the board only once as a two and three year old. He won his first ever race and had a great stakes record as a two year old. As a four year old he came over to America and completed his career with three victories including a Grade 2 victory in the Bel Air Handicap at Hollywood Park. He also had two place finishes in the Ramser and the Goodwood handicaps at Santa Anita. His broodmare sire, Ministrada, was a very successful colt as well. As a two year old, Ministrada won eight of his first nine races ever! He completed his successful career winning the Gulfstream Sprint Championship Handicap, the Donn, and the Tom Fool all as a four year old.

Fast forward to 2004 when Rahystrada was foaled and to 2006 when he won his first race as a two year old. Rahystrada actually only missed the board once in his first eight races! However his true success didn’t show until late into his five year old campaign. This is when Rahystrada really started to get things together. Coming along with two allowance victories and another in the claiming ranks, he won the Grade 3 River City Handicap at Churchill Downs. Along the way to where we are now, Rahystrada has won the Colonial Turf Cup Stakes, The Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes, and the Arlington Handicap…TWICE! He also showed very good form in both of his Arlington Million appearances with a 4th place finish in 2010 and a 5th place finish in 2011.

This horse is certainly getting finer with age and I hope he has another good showing at this year’s Million!

Stay tuned for another Million Day profile coming soon!

What the Nation is saying about Getting Finer With Age: Arlington Million Profile of Rahystrada...

Funny thing is that no one is really giving him a shot here.
Kudos to the connections for a great job of managing this horse's career--his accomplishments at an age when most racehorses have been retired for years bring to mind two of my other favorite turfers, Cetawayo and John's Call. Love to see Leparoux up, and he figures to get a good stalking position and save ground the whole way. He's already proven he loves Arlington's turf course, if he's within 3-4 lengths of the lead turning for home, look out!
looking for 8th this year...
John Henry, Rossi Gold, The Tin Man, Sandpit just a few of the other to run in three Arlington Millions
Starting in three straight runnings of the Million will be an accomplishment in its own right.

(Hey it's me - the DARK HORSE)

Greetings and welcome to my "dark" blog!  I have been a fan of horse racing since I was about 12 years old.  Growing up in Minnesota, my dad would take me and my brothers to Canterbury Downs and I would practically beg to go every weekend!!  I made my first "big" score there hitting the win, place, and exacta in the same race at age 14 (pulled in $84 with horses named Railroad Red and Racers Dream!).  I also had a poster in my bedroom of Lost Code winning the 1987 St. Paul Derby!

I followed racing all through the remainder of high school and college in Illinois, paying close attention to the likes of Lost Code, Alysheba, Cryptoclearance, Risen Star, Sunday Silence, and Tabasco Cat.  I spent every possible moment at Arlington Park with my dad, taking time to develop computer programs (on Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS) to try to find patterns and handicap races more accurately.  My dad taught me a lot about handicapping races, paying particular attention to class moves!

I'm more of a fan of racing now than ever before, and have made a lot of friends in, and because of, the industry.  For that I am eternally grateful!  Once being deemed the second best racing ambassador in Chicago (hey I've been called worse),
I now reside in the Richmond, Virginia area and will be covering many different aspects of racing - DARK HORSE STYLE!  My goal for this blog is to get people more interested in horse racing while focusing on my home(s) away from home, the race tracks of America! My favorite tracks are Arlington, Colonial, Canterbury, Del Mar, Gulfstream, and Keeneland!

At the end of the day though, I'm just a regular guy who loves horse racing a whole lot.   It is my honor to be a part of the Horse Racing Nation team and I truly hope you enjoy this blog.
