Jerry Hollendorfer announced this morning that local star Exit Stage Left will miss next Saturday's $200,000 Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby.

The New Jersey-bred colt, who is a perfect 3-for-3 in his career with three stakes wins, including the California Derby, was set to be one of the favorites in next week's race.

"The horse came back from galloping this morning and was injured, " said Hollendorfer by phone from Santa Anita. "There's no way to know why, or, actually, what happened, but the horse can't run. He's going to have to have some time off and that's all I can tell you."

Hollendorfer had planned to run both Exit Stage Left and Puppy Manners in the race but now will bring up Tamarando for the race. Tamarando, winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, will be ridden by Russell Baze.

In other El Camino notes, according to agent Craig O'Brien, Gary Stevens is planning on riding the Tom Proctor trained Enterprising in the race.

got the snaggles mixed up then
Heavens to Murgatroyd, they credit all my stuff to my brother even. The name's Snagglepuss I'll thank you.
good name old Snaggletooth's line
Eight confirmed starters including Enterprising and Tamarando with 3 more possible Grazen’s Hope, Life Is A Joy and Pearl Spectre. No Texas Ryano
Hope it's not serious. An Enterprising-Exit Stage Left rematch would have been great.
I would LOVE to see Texas Ryano run in this one. If not, I'd be wanting a big effort out of Tamarando. Don, I hope you'll report more news in the coming week on this race.
Really sorry to hear that my fellow NJ-bred is out of action.
Hope he's OK ... I like this one.

Meet Don August

I have been involved in horse racing, from a fan to sportswriter, for the past 30 years. The first time my dad took me to the track, I picked a horse named "Black Tornado" and when he won, I was hooked.  From then on, I spent weekends and occasional school days at the race track, and my enjoyment of the sport led me to try my hand at being a jockey agent, which i did for 3 years. When that didn't work out as I had hoped, I concentrated on my writing career by covering big races and doing summer fair handicapping, off and on, for the Contra Costa Times.

Today, I stay involved in the sport by being part of a group that currently owns two horses stabled at Golden Gate Fields. As all owners, we have dreams of someday having that special horse.  Besides writing about horse racing I enjoy covering many sports and have had the honor of meeting and writing about some incredible athletes.
