Bombs away is back with two bankroll plays at Oaklawn Park today. In the 4th the one horse All Chromed Out offers some outstanding value from the one hole. After breaking from the 9 and 10 post in his last 2 races and being 5 wide in each he gets a cozier post and should be able to close while saving ground into a favorable pace scenario. The 5 horse Dr. Bill figures to be his main opposition. Dr. Bill made a nice move to get the lead in his last but needed the race after a lengthy layoff and faded to 2nd. I will key the 1 with the other contenders in a wide open race and double key All Chromed Out in the 3rd and 4th slots with Dr. Bill #5 in the 1st 2nd slots. The bomber plays are as follows.

Hot Pace Offers Big Bomb in Santa Anita's 10th

I am finally ready for my first play of 2013. This will officially start my bankroll wagers as well. I will begin with a $3000 stake and will blog weekly plays and detail the winners and losers along with my running ROI for the year. I will try to delineate my best angles and logic for selecting my "bombs" and hopefully be in the minority and turn a profit for the year. Let's get started.

In Santa Anita's 10th race today, we have a full field on runners, which is always a prerequisite to finding a price horse. It accomplishes two things. First, it ensures an honest pace scenario the majority of the time and second, it creates value with many horses to choose from.

After handicapping this race it becomes clear that the pace will be hot with the 1 2 3 5 7 8 and 13 all contesting the lead and that the ML fav #2 is very vulnerable because of his early speed running style. This is exactly the type of race we are looking for to zero in on a bomb. There are a few closers that will benefit from the hot early fractions but I'm landing on # 4 Star Navigator who has one of the best

Pick 6 Blunder Becomes $21K Pick 4 Score

Sunday might have been my worst Pick 6 mistake of all time. But in the end, it led to my biggest Pick 4 score ever.

After a bad day on Saturday, I managed to hit a couple races early in the day. So I was feeling good and decided to go in on the Aqueduct Pick 6 carryover. I played a sizeable ticket, especially considering I keyed the 2-1 co-favorite in the first leg. That one came in, but then in race after race where I spread deep, I watch favorite after favorite roll home. I did manage to have some excitement as I was alive to the 5 and the 8. The 5 ended up going off at 12-1 and had a $12,000 payoff, but the 8 was the chalk and the payoff was only $600 and change. In the end, it didn't matter, because Ramon Dominguez owned the Big A turf course, took the 7 horse back and coasted to victory with ease. At least I got two consolation 5 of 6 payoffs - worth a whopping $34 each!

Taking Down The Pick 5 Pool - Anatomy of Pick 5 Crush

The first key to playing a horizontal wager is determining if you have an edge and if there will be a substantial potential payoff. I instantly determined that the Valley View Pick 5 sequence was a great opportunity after scanning the races and seeing full fields with many vulnerable favorites. I texted my brother and said this would be a 50k payoff.

The Turfway stake today offers a ton of value with a contentious full field of 12 going to the post. After capping I have landed on the 2 inside runners #1 (Helen Belen 10-1 ML) and the #2 (Miss Dora 20-1 ML).

There should be a legimate pace with the 4 5 9 knocking heads upfront and our picks should get ideal inside stalking trips. Both fillies ran well in their latest race. The #1 won her last by a half length while 4 wide off a short rest at Chuchill Downs and the #2 finished 5th in a BCup 87k race while 4 wide but won her start 2 back on the Turfway track. Other positives inlcude the local records for the #1 (3/7 at TP) and #2 (1/1 at TP). They both also have posted solid 4f breezes so come into the race in excellent form. This is a wide open race so let's try and nail a nice tri keying our two prices in the 1st and 2nd slots.

BombsAway in the Keeneland Nightcap

After a brief hiatus due to some turf washouts plays and a Mickey Mouse trip, we are back with a 15-1 ML pick #6 Lighthouse Sound in Keeneland's 10th race today. This is a contentious field of 12 but I feel the 6 should sit an ideal stalking trip and put in a nice late run.

Lighthouse Sound just missed in his last at Momouth Park. He stalked some modest fractions and closed in a sub 24 last quarter but the winner prevailed by a neck. With some better fractions to run at today courtesy of the 2, 8, and 10, his late run should put him in the mix at the wire. We will keep the play fairly simple for this one. $50 win #6 and hedge a place finish by wheeling a $10 exacta with the logical contenders over the #6. $10 exacta wheel 345789/6. Finally let's play a $4 exacta wheel 1 10 11 12/6 with a few outsiders that could pop at a big number. Total plays $126

BombsAway Longshot Blog has a Longshot Trifecta

The 6th at Saratoga is right in our bomber wheelhouse. We catch a full field which ensures an honest pace scenario and no jockey cat and mouse games after they handicapped the race and more importantly we get VALUE.

The 2-4-5-8-12 all figure to knock heads in the early going, followed by the 3,7,11 in the second flight and the 1,6,9 coming from the rear. With the quintet of speedballs softening up each other, we will land on two nice priced closers (#1 Julians' Approval and #6 Lights Out Lisa) as our trifecta keys. The #1 looks attractive for two main reasons. First, she learned how win in her last race. Horses close to becoming career maidens often show vast improvement after figuring things out. This is a great angle which always provides an inflated price due to skepticism. Second, she closed her last half furlong in under 6 seconds and with the anticipated speed duel up front she will be flying late at 20-1 ML.
